Psychology Mentors, Inspirations, and Influences

  • Dr. Barry McKee
    Carleton University
My Masters supervisor, Barry was a wonderful mentor and friend. He introduced me to the importance of taking a break from work, and very productive yet informal conversations. So impressed was I that I made him a plaque of being a wonderful supervisor to me upon my graduation.
  • Chris Clement
    International Commission on Radiological Protection
Chris was a director at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission where I knew him. He was recognized as a brilliant speaker, very knowledgeable on radiological protection, and is now the Scientific Secretary to the ICRP.
  • Dr. Sydney Dekker
    Griffith University
Sydney Dekker wrote various white papers (which later became publications) which inspired me to go back to school. His ideas are infectious; he has written prolifically, as well as being very active in giving academic talks. I look forward to seeing him for the first time September 2014!
  • Dr. Richard Cook
Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden
I saw Dr. Cook when I first undertook this journey to understand safety science at a conference in 1998. Dr. Cook has many publications, and is a great speaker, and an excellent person with whom to exchange ideas in conversation.
  • Dr. Don Berwick
    Running for Governor of Massachusetts
An undoubted guru of patient safety, Don Berwick has been instrumental on bringing patient safety to the forefront. I had the opportunity to see him once in Toronto in 2012 (I had to hand in my comprehensive exam early to do so); I was inspired by his many evidence-based ideas for improvement.

Summary

Primary goal: To work in a collegial environment, where meaning in work is appreciated
Will become available: September 14, 2015
Willing to relocate: No

Description

My dream job would entail working with concepts in safety science, and helping disseminate the little understood theories that have evolved in safety. I would help organizations operationalize these complex ideas, with an aim to help improve safety. I would assist in assessing overall change readiness, and help with any evidence based interventions chosen, as well as assist in the evaluation of such interventions, most especially through qualitative methods. The environment would value lifelong learning and exchange of ideas, and promote informal and formal education.
