learning and helping

Let me first tell you a bit about my work experience; I started off as an English Teacher more than 24 years ago in my hometown, Santo André, located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. From there on, I have had numerous posts at various language institutes around the city of São Paulo, where I've lived for almost 20 years now. I have taught young learners, adolescents and adults and have had great experiences as a teacher and a learner for I have learned a lot about education along this path.

Now, towards education, in a broader sense, is what motivated me to join, on a voluntary basis, a social project in its beginning. Around 2005 and until last June, I have worked as a coordinator, trainer and materials writer for EFALL(English for All) an NGO recently turned into a Social Project, that enables English-speaking members of our community to become volunteer teachers of English to needy students, adolescents and young adults, living in the outskirts of São Paulo, my hometown. Throughout this experience, I have become deeply involved with issues related to motivation and self-esteem.
Talking about involvement, I was, for the period of 12 months, deeply immersed in the setting up of a language school. That was back in 2011 when I was called upon to be a coordinator for a brand new school of English for very young learners and adolescents. In this position, I selected and trained personnel, from teachers to administrative staff, dealt with parents daily and made all the necessary arrangements and decisions pertaining to the regular operation of the school. I learned a lot there!

As for learning, this is truly a never-ending path for me. Alongside my rookie years as an English teacher, I got my first graduation: Law. As I had already been bitten by the 'teaching bug', I pursued the formal graduate path to become a licensed English Teacher in Brazil. Then, I went further on into language and graduated from the Alumni Formation Course for Translators and Interpreters. After some time, I went back to the benches in the form of an online MA in TEFL(Teaching Engish as a Foreign Language), being among the very first group to have this experience here in Brazil. And then, more than a decade past, I took two MOOC courses, again the very first ones offered by Stanford University in this format. More recently, I joined, again among first timers, a post graduation course in Neuroscience and Psychology to better understand how the brain learns.

I embrace new challenges, especially in the form of learning and that's why I'm here now, learning the basics of Social Psychology and striving to become a better human beiing!
