CARPE DIEM

I am an educator and a human rights activist with a strong sense of social justice and to that end, much of what I do centers around human rights issues and social advocacy. My areas of advocacy have recently extended to persons living with disabilities, mental health education and advocacy for seniors.

The decision to study psychology was borne out of another passion which is writing. I studied Journalism for one year at Ryerson University in Toronto and discovered that psychology piqued my interest. It would be some years later that I found myself engaged in full time studies at York University with a focus on psychology. My range of teaching areas include high school special education and drama, adult ESL and literacy as well as facilitation of small group dynamics in psychology at York University. When I am not engaged in academic pursuits, my other raison d'etre is animal rescues. While at York, I found a family of kittens with their mother, and so began a lifelong relationship with feline rescues and advocacy.

My other interests include Politics and International Relations. Some would say that I am a voracious reader with a thirst for knowledge that rivals a sponge. Gardening has become my summer hobby and I am a music junkie. I also thrive on live theatre. More than that, I am an avid photographer preferring to roam the lean and mean streets of the city which is replete with stories and opportunities that shape our collective imagination. I love to capture and document those moments in time that remind one of how art imitates life and often vice versa.

In order to balance academic interests and the demands of life, I am actively engaged with energy and meditative practices both as a practitioner as well as a facilitator in Reiki, Tai Chi, Emotional Field Therapy and Labyrinth meditations. Research shows that when we quiet the mind, our physiology responds and we slow down the constant mind chatter allowing ourselves to ground and heal. In our fast paced lives, we all need time to regroup and decompress. Energy healing and nature are restorative for the mind, the body and the soul.
