Carpe Diem. Sieze the Day!

Hi! I'm Erwin. I'm a journalist, an educator, and an aspiring entrepreneur--the latter is a dream that I hope to fulfill soon.

If I were to pick words that best describes me, they would be: passionate, calm, and "hungry."

I'm passionate about life, learning, and music. My family takes precedence over everything. I love to teach and play guitar.

I'm also calm no matter what the situation is. I rarely panic, but take my time to listen to people to help me and figure out things. I also respect people's opinions. I give them time to discuss what they think, and I weigh them with mine before I make a decision.

I'm hungry for learning and thirst for knowledge. I enjoy meeting people who share my interests, values, and passion. Often this happens over coffee or a few bottles of beer. One of the best quotes that I live by is to "Stay hungry. Stay foolish." Thus, it is natural for me to be attracted to journalism, teaching, and entrepreneurship.

It was a case of serendipity that I found out about social psychology. I was talking to some friends when one of them mentioned this intriguing subject. A week later, one fellow student and friend told me about this online course that is available on Coursera. I didn't let this opportunity pass. I signed up and here I am writing my "About Me" page for the nth time.

When I was applying for my first job, I was asked, "How do you see yourself in 5 years?" Honestly, I don't know. I live day to day. Everyday is a lesson. Every person I meet is a story waiting to be unraveled. I imagine the future a lot. But I don't plan too far because I want to surprise myself. But there's no day that passes that is not interesting.

As John Keating (Robin Williams) declared to his students in the movie Dead Poet's Society: Carpe Diem. Seize the Day! This lesson remains true to this day for me. I believe that everyday is an adventure, just like this lesson in social psychology.

To end, I want to share this line from a poem:

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles today
To-morrow will be dying.

Psychology Mentors, Inspirations, and Influences

  • Leo Magno
    Asian Development Bank
My friend and mentor who has kept me sane all these years. He taught me life's lessons and helped me find my way through. A journalist, tactician, author, entrepreneur, and mentor, Leo continues to fascinate me with his ideas about the future. He always reminds me to "Know Thyself."
  • Malcolm Gladwell
    Author
He introduced me to "pop psychology." A journalist, he continues to inspire me to explain how the world works, why we behave the way we do. He's someone I aspire to be--as I also think of writing my own non-fiction novel on what makes us tick.
  • Steve Jobs
    Apple
A thought leader, an innovator, and a genius. Jobs has inspired a lot of people including me. His life and his accomplishments were considered "insanely great." His legacy is now part of our lives.
