Professionally, I'm a working professional and a self employed entrepreneur. I work as a security officer, privacy officer and security consultant at Hanze University for Applied Sciences in Groningen, the Netherlands.
In my current security network we face the challenge to get people interested enough in information security to get them aware of the risks of using data and ict-facilities on private, corporate and public devices all over the world. Security is not the sexiest of subjects. Are you usually skipping the 'licence agreement, terms and conditions etc.... ' and check 'I Agree', for the sake of convenience (hurry, cannot be bothered etc... ). Well, welcome to the club.
In my private life I started a business in 1986, editing and desk top publishing (in a period where scalable fonts were just about to start, and WYSIWYG was still something for the future). In the late nineties a coauthored a book on natural horsemanship (' Het Paard als Partner'), published in 1999, three editions, the last was fully sold out in 2003. As a certified horse trainer and instructor, I had my own private riding school and taught until 2012 groundwork, riding, posture, communication and dressage. Some horses were alto cooperating in working with special needs kids, one-on-one, especially with issues in the autistic spectrum.
In 2013 - due to health issues - I stopped riding and started a vineyard in the field, since the meadows were too much for the 4 horses we enjoy nowadays. We planted over a 2000 white grapes, and expect the first wine - organic if at all - in about two to three years from now. Very exciting! I'm married to an ethnic African, and no kids of my own. There are always animals to enrich my life. I enjoy looking at free roaming chickens, the beauty of the horses in the field, walking the dog, working in the garden with my cats always nearby. The latest addition is an african bee hyve. If one can learn anything about social communion and operating as one organism, it is from the bees. My motto is one cannot claim functional leadership, it is granted. The Alpha mare in the herd is the one the other horses trust will safeguard their survival, not the one fighting and kicking and making a lot of noise (those are the ones under in the hierarchical order). The Queen bee is not one leading the group into a new territory: she trusts the explorers, builders, workers, honeybees and nursery bees to do the right thing. And they all take the role that is most functional at a specific time. When it the time is right, they go as one. Beautiful!
I very much appreciate to balance the professional work (sitting in meeting rooms and behind computer screens, focusing on risks and vulnerabilities) and my private work with nature and a lot of physical input, with tangible products as a result. We are self-provisioning with a nice organic garden for about 35 years now, and I would not know how to live without getting my hands dirty.
