Stay calm, be brave, wait for the signs (Thomas King).

Hi, I'm Winnie Hunsburger, an educator, a mom, a grandmother and a traveller. I've worked for the last twenty years as a teacher and teacher leader in both the public and independent school systems in Canada. Before that, I spent almost as much time working in maternal-child health as a childbirth educator, a writer and a researcher. What brings me to Social Psychology is my interest in understanding how we make decisions. Whether teaching children or adults, and, indeed, thinking about my own choices, I've been intrigued by how we even when we have the best information possible and we know what's good for us to do, we sometimes make decisions that are less than healthy or helpful. I am also intrigued (and frankly a little frustrated) by how we can often see what others should be doing, but we don't seem to know what is best for ourselves.

When I am not teaching, I am usually cooking, eating, riding my bike, walking, paddling or reading. Or... thinking about another MOOC.

Psychology Mentors, Inspirations, and Influences

  • Catherine Ruskin
    Childbirth Education Association & Midwife
Catherine trained me to be a childbirth educator and inspired me to really examine what "freedom of choice, based on knowledge of the alternatives, really means.
  • Deborah Richardson
    Principal, Thomas Street Middle School
Deborah made sure learning in all her schools was fun and inspiring. She put her trust in me, supported me - but always challenged me when she thought I could do better.
  • Mary Beattie
    OISE, University of Toronto
Mary was my doctoral thesis supervisor. She gently but firmly pushed me past my preconceptions, and demanded the highest quality work from me. She knew, too, when to step back and let me find my own equilibrium.
