I have been involved in protecting people and places by entire adult life. While you might not think that has little to do with psychology, I have discovered that it's all about psychology and what motivates groups or individuals to behave the way they do in a given situation.
As a trained Hostage Negotiator and Emergency Management Professional, I find social psychology is vital in both the planning and execution stage of any successful conclusion to a crisis.
How do you motivate a person to do what they do not want to do and how do you motivate a person to not do what they obviously are intent on doing? The answer is Psychology and more precisely the science of Social Psychology.
My personal research into this area is to understand the social influences that might be helpful in gaining a satisfactory solution to a crisis. How can I prevent a crowd from becoming a mob? How can I prevent fear, uncertainty or anger from causing a crowd to become a mob? How do I move a large crowd from one place to another during a crisis as quickly and safely as possible? How do I keep one individual or several from terrorizing others?
Social Psychology might hold many of the answers I seek. When you look deeper into the reasons people behave the way they do you might find ways to prevent them from doing what they are determined to do, even if only for a short time. Time is always in short supply and time is the thing we need most.
My job is to prevent tragedy, if I fail, my job is to marshal available resources to purchase time, and even seconds can make a difference and mitigate the tragic outcome.

Richard Lee Daniel HatzUnited States ArmyMy father who fought in an unpopular war while leaving his wife and two small children behind. He managed to keep his humanity intact and return to us alive. He has always been true to his beliefs and steadfast in doing what is right, not what is easy. He is the primary influence in my life.
