“A smile is the beginning of peace.” Mother Teresa
Well all started when I was a little girl. I must have been around 9 to 10 years old when I realised that the best way for me to spend my school breaks ,was to visit the kindergarten right next to my primary school. My little friends were waiting for me, and I still remember how they would always sit around me and listened to my stories. I loved making my own stories with little poems and magical characters, as I do now for my students. It was right then when I realised that I would like to be a kindergarten teacher. I shared that thought with their teacher and honestly she wasn't that supportive. I assume she thought:''She's just a kid that's not what she's going to do afterall ''. I proved her wrong!
After High school I went straight to the University of Patras on the ''Department of education in the Preschool age''. During those four years I learnt things that I wouldn't even imagine that take part in the learning process, from theories of how we learn to Neuroscience and the problems that may occur and make it more difficult for some students to learn. The learning process is so fascinating and challenging. It is magical indeed because it is a vivid process and you have to adjust to the circumstances from the level of your class to their needs, feelings etc.
The practical training in many different kindergartens was really illuminating. An incident in one of them made me deal with the Multicultural Education on my Diploma thesis. There was a young boy from Pakistan , Muzamil. He was constantly crying so his teacher used to take him to her office to draw there with an other teacher in order not to interrupt the lesson. In one of my practical training lessons in this classroom I just hugged him and asked him to be my helper for the reading activity in order to encourage him to participate. He sat next to me and I distinctively remember how all reacted when at the end of the story I asked him ,if he liked the story ,and he answered in Greek. Everyone was astonished. Nobody knew that he could talk in Greek because they hadn't asked him. It was quite a shock for me and made me realise more that this is not just a job. Children are the future and in those sensitive years we definate form them in many ways. As Dr Haim Ginott pointed :''Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression.''
When I graduated from University I started working in classrooms both as a kindergarten and English teacher. There was something that really made me worried. In a classroom you have many students with so different backgrounds, characters and some of them might have special educational needs from dyslexia to autism how could I be of help in order to offer them equal educational opportunities. So it was right then when I started an annual programme at University of Athens for Special education and parent counselling. And now that I'm done with that I have started taking coursera classes in order to learn more. I love studying psychology since I was a student. I had the chance to study Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, General Psychology and Psychodynamic Psychology. In the meantime I was trying to catch up with all the new theories by reading articles.I think it is going to be really useful not only for my job but for my everyday life too. But my journey won't end up there I'm intending to do a MSc on Child Psychology next year.
In my free time I love doing a bunch of creative activities from story writing , to drawing , decorating, cooking and knitting.I just can't keep still. I start each day with a big smile, remember the things that I am grateful for and enjoy a beautiful day! A smile can really make a difference! Try it:)
