Mrs. Stephanie Bissonette
Passion didn't ignite in me until I was 30. I will admit, I was late to the party. I focused on my career, my children and the noise in the day to day life. The spark was set with a course I took, called Social Justice. Suddenly, the noise stopped and I looked around and instead of following the sounds aimlessly, I now know to ask “why?” Following blindly has led us down some terrible paths, I originally read the David Rosenhan study in The Social Context of Mental Health and Illness (University of Toronto). Where following protocol and following instructions blindly led to the false hospitalization and diagnosis of 8 “patients.” Now reading the Obedience by Stanley Milgram, I see that the pattern may have had more to do with authority. Staff are credible witnesses. Patients are not. (Rosenhan) Following my path of Sociology has led me here.
Sorting out my options to find what really beckons me, so far is the Disability Acts, fighting Ableism and recognizing and addressing Privilege. As mentioned in the readings from Social Thinking, Chapter 2.
“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”
― Ernest Hemingway
