Dr. Non Arkaraprasertkul
Architect, Designer, Anthropologist, and Amateur Social Psychologist
Trained as an architect, urban designer, historian, and anthropologist, I employ interdisciplinary research methods to find solutions for pressing social issues concerning contemporary urbanism such as urban growth, social change, and mobility and mental health. Owing to my eclectic background above, my research approach includes both inquisitive ethnography and participatory design research.
Since 2018, I co-founded and served as Principal Design Thinker at Anti-Fragile Social Design + Consultancy (AFSD+C) based in Bangkok, Thailand. At AFSD+C, we use human-centered design (also known as design thinking) to tackle some of the most pressing problems in the industry and society today. We believe that to keep pace with the current form of capitalism, it's simply not enough for businesses and individuals to be "resilient" or even "robust" but "anti-fragile," the term that Nassim Taleb terms as "the loves randomness, uncertainty, and chaos, from which one can grow stronger." Our team consists of practical and open-minded practitioners and social scientists who believe that we can co-create a better world through engaged research and design implementation. We coach and help companies, communities and institutions re-think their roles in our society for the betterment of all
Over the past decade, I have also engaged with international higher education. I have taught experimental courses in architecture, urban design, and social sciences at more than a dozen of universities in three different continents. I was at the University of South Florida serving as Distinguished Visiting Gibbons Professor of Architecture in 2013; at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where I served as Visiting Lecturer in Architecture and Urban Design in 2008; at Fudan and New York Universities in Shanghai where I taught undergrad courses in society and culture from 2014 - 2016. I also served as Honorary Senior Lecturer in Urban Regional Planning and Policy at the University of Sydney and subsequently Senior Lecturer in Urbanism in 2016 - 2017. Recently, I held two academic appointments as Adjunct Professor in Society at Culture at Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (RMUTP) in Bangkok as well as International Visiting Professor of the Middle and Far East at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.
