 Complexity and Interacting Systems

The Directorate of Social, Behavior and Economic Sciences (SBE) of the National Science Foundation wishes to draw attention to two types of funding opportunities for scientists in SBE fields who are studying complexity and interacting systems phenomena.

First, the Directorate will augment funding in its regular programs in FY 2008 in order to encourage submission of proposals that advance understanding of complexity and interacting systems phenomena in SBE fields. The Directorate has just issued a "Dear Colleague Letter" to this effect, which provides further information. The Letter is available at:

The relevant due dates for proposals will be in January and February, 2008.

In addition, a new NSF-wide Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) solicitation presents funding opportunities for research projects that would yield advances in computational thinking for "Understanding Complexity in Natural, Built, and Social Systems", among other topics. A letter of intent for this competition is required by 30 November 2007.
