Outstanding candidates interested in applied judgment/decision research, message framing and health communication, patient decision support - decision aids, or related fields are invited to apply. An excellent opportunity for researchers interested in both laboratory and applied community-based research, this will be the first postdoctoral position in an emerging social science research lab with dedicated ties to both settings.

This fellowship will be jointly based in an MSU-affiliated specialty practice and clinical research center in Grand Rapids, MI, and in an experimental social psychology lab at MSU in East Lansing, MI. The fellow will have the opportuntity to: (1) participate in on-going clinic-based research, translational research projects, and experimental psychology laboratory-based research; (2) collaborate with clinicians developing new collaborative research examining basic processes of patient decision making in rheumatoid arthritis; and (3) initiate and conduct their own research with full access to the resources of both community providers and a major university. If desired, there will be the opportunity to interface with multicenter biologic therapy clinical trials.

Specific responsibilities relate to the development and testing of patient decision support tools, including: (1) conducting interviews to assess patient preferences and perceived needs to support medication decision making/adherence; (2) qualitative analysis of physician-patient encounter transcripts; (3) designing and experimentally testing the effectiveness of various decision support tools, for both simulated and actual medical decisions; and (4) secondary analyses of cross-sectional survey and clinical trial data of rheumatoid arthritis patients. Approximately 25% time will be available to initiate research of personal interest, with full access to all available resources.
