The School of Psychology at the University of Exeter offers a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer position in Social and/or Organisational Psychology and a Postdoctoral Research Officer Position, employed on a large research project “The individual in the group: Social identity and the dynamics of change”, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

The Social, Economic and Organizational Research Group is seeking to expand and strengthen its current research profile. Current members of the group conduct high-quality research with a strong international focus. Much of this is funded by grants from main funding bodies (in particular the ESRC), from Government and industry. The group boasts excellent research facilities and labs (some of which were recently refurbished). We are keen to appoint new members of staff who will complement existing strengths or who will introduce new ones to what is a vibrant and flourishing research group.

Applications are invited for:

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Position (continuing)
An appointment, ranging from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer (equivalent to North American Assistant to Associate Professor) can be made in any area within Social, Economic and Organizational psychology.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in social psychology, and have a track record of conference presentations and publication. Applicants are expected to have a portfolio of independent research and teaching experience commensurate with the level of the application. Salary starting from £29,139 p.a. (Lecturer) or £35,837 p.a. (Senior Lecturer).

Research Officer Position
The Research officer will be employed on a large research project, “The individual in the group: Social identity and the dynamics of change,” funded by the Economic and Social Research Council to the IPSIS research group (Institute for the Psychological Study of Identity in Society). The position is a 3-year appointment.

This grant investigates social and cognitive processes in group, organizational and clinical settings. This project's twin aim is (a) to increase understanding of the processes of identity change, and (b) to explore the relationship between these processes and individual and group well-being. It will do this through three inter-related streams of research building on the combined expertise of social psychologists and clinical and cognitive neuropsychologists. Stream 1 systematically examines basic processes and dynamics within groups, exploring the conditions that encourage and support change within groups. Stream 2 focuses on how these basic processes play out in organizational settings examining the role of social identity in organizational change and in relation to workplace stress. Stream 3 focuses on how these basic processes affect individuals' well-being and mental health. In practical terms, the project addresses questions pertaining to (a) the fostering of cohesion and trust in groups, (b) the promotion of effective leadership, role modelling and change management, and (c) the reduction of psychological costs associated with identity change and loss.

The research officer will work closely with the research team (consisting of 3 postdocs, 3 RAs and the grant holders: Alex Haslam, Tom Postmes, Jolanda Jetten, Michelle Ryan, Catherine Haslam, and Huw Williams) and international collaborators across all aspects of the project. The post holder should have good statistical skills and familiarity with advanced statistical methods, along with good organisational skills. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in social psychology, and have a track record of conference presentations and publication. Relevant experience/knowledge of clinical and neuropsychological methods and theory would be an advantage. In addition, the post holder will be expected to assist in writing reports, conference papers and journal articles and be able to interact with external organisations and liaise with other agencies.
