PhD Research Assistantships at the University of Exeter

The Institute for the Psychological Study of Identity in Society (IPSIS) in the School of Psychology at the University of Exeter (UK) is offering two funded PhD Research Assistantships, available to applicants intending to register for an MPhil/PhD in October 2007.

The School of Psychology is one of the UK’s Top 10 Psychology departments (Guardian, 2006) and provides high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses informed by our internationally-rated research (RAE 5).

The research undertaken in IPSIS focuses on the study of self and social identity with a basis in social, clinical, cognitive neuro- and organisational psychology. In the 2007-2008 academic year, IPSIS will have more than 13 full-time staff and more than 20 PhD students. Members of IPSIS are currently working on a large research project “The individual in the group: Social identity and the dynamics of change,” funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

This grant investigates social and cognitive processes in group, organizational and clinical settings. This project's twin aim is (a) to increase understanding of the processes of identity change, and (b) to explore the relationship between these processes and individual and group well-being. It will do this through three inter-related streams of research building on the combined expertise of social psychologists and clinical and cognitive neuropsychologists. Stream 1 systematically examines basic processes and dynamics within groups, exploring the conditions that encourage and support change within groups. Stream 2 focuses on how these basic processes play out in organizational settings examining the role of social identity in organizational change and in relation to workplace stress. Stream 3 focuses on how these basic processes affect individuals' well-being and mental health. In practical terms, the project addresses questions pertaining to (a) the fostering of cohesion and trust in groups, (b) the promotion of effective leadership, role modelling and change management, and (c) the reduction of psychological costs associated with identity change and loss.

We currently have two half-time Research Assistant positions available which would suit a prospective PhD student with an interest in self and identity. It is anticipated that the successful applicants would undertake a part-time PhD under the supervision of one of the grant holders, while at the same time contributing to Streams 1 and 3 of the grant, with tasks including research design, data collection, data entry, conducting literature searches and reviews, and liaising with participants and organisations.

Salary starting from £10,734 p.a. part time (full-time salary equivalent £21,468 p.a.) plus full payment of tuition fees at Home/EU rates.

Further particulars may be obtained from Michelle Ryan (M.Ryan@exeter.ac.uk) and further information can be obtained from the other award holders: Alex Haslam (A.Haslam@exeter.ac.uk); Tom Postmes (T.Postmes@exeter.ac.uk); Jolanda Jetten (J.Jetten@exeter.ac.uk); Catherine Haslam (C.Haslam@exeter.ac.uk); or Huw Williams (W.H.Williams@exeter.ac.uk).
