The Junior Scholars Professional Development Task Force of SPSSI (APA Division 9) invites all junior scholars (i.e., those up to 5 years post-Ph.D.) to take part in two sessions geared toward new scholars at the convention of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) which will be held June 23-25, 2006, in Long Beach, CA. See the SPSSI website for more details about the convention www.spssi.org.
SESSION 1: Dr. Jennifer Crocker will give a workshop for junior scholars entitled "Time for Your Life and Your Goals" -- see her description of the workshop below. Those who would like to take part in the workshop must register in advance (the workshop is free to conference attendees). Please e-mail me if you would like to register for the workshop: staceywg@isr.umich.edu. Because the workshop is individualized (see below), the number that can attend the workshop is limited. So please let me know asap if interested!

"Time for Your Life and Your Goals" - Time is life; how you spend your time is how you spend your life. Yet, the quality of our time is often a source of dissatisfaction; we spend our time doing things we feel obligated to do, falling behind and feeling guilty or trying to get things crossed off our to-do lists as efficiently as possible, dealing with unplanned crises instead of making progress toward our long-term goals. Often we wish we had more time for the things we love to do and the people we love to be with. In this workshop, we will examine our goals, how we spend our time, and the quality of our time, with the aim of bringing our use of time into alignment with our most cherished goals, and in the process shifting from being preoccupied to being present, being stressed to being joyful, and from scarcity to abundance of time. In a three hour workshop, we can only scratch the surface of these issues. But I hope at a minimum participants will have a new way to think about their schedules and their use of time that opens new possibilities for how we experience time. Be forewarned; before participating, participants will have a homework assignment to complete to help them assess the current reality regarding their time.

SESSION 2: Established scholars studying various social issues will participate in a round-table discussion on career-related issues for junior scholars. Dr. Eugene Borgida, Dr. Kay Deaux, Dr. Irene Frieze, Dr. Sam Gaertner, Dr. James Jackson, and Dr. James Jones will share their experiences and provide their insights on a variety of topics relevant to the success of new scholars studying social issues.

Potential topics include: * How to survive the first years as an Assistant Professor; * The tenure process; * Balancing research and teaching; * Publishing on social issues in top-tier journals; * Effective Grant writing and/or Developing fundable ideas; * Navigating departmental politics. Your questions will also be welcomed during the discussion.
