 Passing of Robert ("Bob") Arkin
Posted by: Patrick J Carroll
Title/Position: Associate Professor
School/Organization: The Ohio State University--Lima
Sent to listserv of: SESP, SPSSI
Date posted: December 16th, 2016

Dearest Friends and Colleagues,

I am deeply saddened to report the passing of our very own Robert “Bob” Arkin this past week at a young 66. After a difficult three-year battle with cancer, Bob died peacefully Monday morning surrounded by his loving wife, Carol Arkin, and their three boys JD, Jamie, and Jordan.

Bob began his career at the University of Southern California before going on to faculty positions at the University of Missouri and The Ohio State University. Bob published numerous articles and handbooks in the areas of self and identity. He also served on the editorial board of several journals throughout his distinguished career. Notably, Bob was a good man as well as a good scholar. He added so much value to the lives of those around him—on both a personal and professional level. Bob will be missed sorely by his colleagues at Ohio State and around the world. Please join me in remembering the life and career of Bob.

As a closing note, I have appended below a link to the funeral home where Bob’s service will be held on December 17, 2016, from 2-5 pm. For those of you who would like to pay your respects but cannot travel, the site also includes links where you can send well-wishes, share fond memories of Bob, and send gift baskets to the family. Bob’s wife, Carol, has understandably requested that the calls be kept to a minimum while the family grieves. Nonetheless, emails would be welcome. Finally, at this year’s SPSP conference in San Antonio, several of Bob’s close friends and colleagues will be organizing an informal gathering to celebrate his career. All are welcome.

Best wishes,

Pat Carroll
Associate Professor
