 Unfolding IRT Analysis With GGUM2004 Freeware

Dear Colleagues,

If you would like to bring the power of item response theory (IRT) to bear on your attitude or satisfaction measurement applications, then I encourage you to look at some relatively new freeware called GGUM2004. GGUM2004 performs unfolding IRT analysis of responses to traditional Thurstone or Likert style self report questionnaires. Unfolding IRT models are appropriate when individuals respond to questionnaire items on the basis of proximity rather than dominance. In other words, individuals endorse items that appear close to their own positions or “ideal points.” Item responses indicative of a proximity response process have been repeatedly found in attitude, satisfaction, and preference measurement. They have also been found when measuring certain individual differences within developmental processes that occur in distinct stages.

GGUM2004 calculates parameter estimates for several unfolding models suggested by Roberts, Donoghue, and Laughlin (2000; APM). It implements a user-friendly Windows interface, provides realtime graphics to assess model performance, and calculates alternative indices of person, item and model fit. The program is distributed freely from the Unfolding IRT web site located at:

Just click on "Free Software" and then navigate to the GGUM2004 download window. There are installation instructions posted on the web site.

If you visit the web site, you will also notice a link to a new Yahoo discussion group for GGUM2004. Program support is provided to users through the discussion group.
