 Opening in Social Psychology
Posted by: Amber Story
Title/Position: Deputy Director, BCS
School/Organization: National Science Foundation
Sent to listserv of: SPSP, SPSSI
Date posted: December 18th, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

The announcement of the opening for a program director in Social Psychology at NSF has been posted on the NSF web site at:

http://nsf.gov/pubs/2010/bcs10001/bcs10001.jsp?org=BCS

The content of the announcement is pasted below.

We recognize that many qualified and interested candidates may not be available to pursue this position until this academic year has concluded. We encourage you to apply now anyway and ask that you identify your availability in your cover letter. We are also interested in someone with more immediate availability, and the division has flexibility in discussing the terms of that appointment. Thus we may be looking for two different individuals to meet both the immediate and long-term needs of the Social Psychology program.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at astory@nsf.gov or Dr. Mark Weiss, Division Director, at mweiss@nsf.gov.

Sincerely,
Amber Story

Dear Colleague:

The Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Social Psychology program announces a nationwide search to fill a Social Psychology Program Director position.

Formal consideration of interested applicants will begin January 11, 2010. Consideration of incoming applications will continue until the position is filled.

The Social Psychology program at NSF supports basic research on human social behavior, including cultural differences and development over the life span. Among the many research topics supported are: attitude formation and change, social cognition, personality processes, interpersonal relations and group processes, the self, emotion, social comparison and social influence, and the psycho physiological and neurophysical bases of social behavior. The program supports research that is theoretically grounded, based on empirical observation and validation, and has the potential to significantly advance fundamental understanding of social behavior.

The Program Director will have primary responsibilities involving proposal evaluation, project development and support, program planning, and related administrative duties. The scientific expertise of the program director is critical in insuring leadership in program planning and internal management and for translating these into effective scientific, budgetary, and operational activities for the division and directorate. The required special knowledge, skills and background are essential.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Social Psychology or related discipline, plus six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. Appointees are expected to have significant and relevant knowledge of research related to Social Psychology. Also desirable is knowledge of the general scientific community, skill in written communication and preparation of technical reports, an ability to communicate orally, and several years of successful independent research. All appointees are expected to function effectively both within specific programs and in a team mode, contributing to and coordinating with organizations in the Directorate, across the Foundation, and with other Federal and State government agencies and private-sector organizations as necessary.

Candidates will be evaluated on the extent and quality of your experience, education, and research relevant to the duties of the position. We strongly encourage you to specifically address the Quality Ranking Factors below in your Statement of Interest.

Quality Ranking Factors

(1) Ability to communicate effectively and work productively with the scientific community, peers, and co-workers at all levels to advocate program policies and plans and to fulfill NSF’s mission

(2) Ability to organize, implement and manage a proposal-driven grant program, allocating resources to meet a spectrum of goals, including insuring integrity and consistency in the grant award/declination management process

(3) Knowledge of management and organizational concepts, principles, practices and techniques

(4) Ability to work collaboratively with the other program director in the Social Psychology program to effectively manage the program

(5) Ability to work collaboratively with representatives of other programs and agencies so as to enhance interdisciplinary research and the mission of NSF

(6) Ability to assess trends and opportunities in the field with the assistance of the advisory panel

Program Director positions recruited under this announcement may be filled under one of the following appointment options:

* Visiting Scientist Appointment. Appointment to this position will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act. Visiting Scientists are on non- paid leave status from their home institution and appointed to NSF’s payroll as Federal employees. NSF withholds Social Security taxes and pays the home institution’s contributions to maintain retirement and fringe benefits (i.e., health benefits and life insurance), either directly to the home institution or to the carrier. Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $102,721 to $160,078 including locality pay for the area.

* Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Assignment. Individuals eligible for an IPA assignment with a Federal agency include employees of state and local government agencies or institutions of higher education, Indian tribal governments, and other eligible organizations in instances where such assignments would be of mutual benefit to the organizations involved. The individual remains an employee of the home institution, and NSF provides funding toward the assignee’s salary and benefits.

* Temporary Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment to this position will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act. Candidates who do not have civil service status or reinstatement eligibility will not obtain civil service status if selected.
