 Clarification on Stimulus Funds

Dear Colleagues,

I am sure that many of you saw Alan Kraut's email of Friday, March 6, concerning the stimulus funding for behavioral science. I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a few matters. We are very excited about the prospect of having extra funds to support our discipline; however, NSF does not yet have an approved specific plan. NSF is developing the plans for these funds and then must receive approval of them. So there is a lot we don't know quite yet. We don't know, for example, how much money our specific program will receive.

However, there are a few things that we do know. First, stimulus funds are not to be spent on supplements. Second, NSF, and particularly the social psychology program, is not soliciting new proposals. Third, it is the case that we are looking at proposals that were highly competitive but have not been awarded. Indeed, we have already identified a number of proposals that we might be able to fund if we receive sufficient resources from the stimulus package. When NSF finalizes its plans for the stimulus money, we will be in touch with those PIs. There is no need for past and potential PIs to call NSF at this time. Indeed, doing so would be highly unproductive.

Thank you all very much.

Sincerely,
Amber Story
