Faculty Position. The Department of Psychology at Northern Illinois University anticipates making a tenure track appointment in social psychology for Fall 2009. The position is at the rank of assistant professor. Applicants from all areas of social psychology will be considered, but preferred candidates will have an active program of research in the area of group processes or interpersonal processes. The successful applicant will join a combined social and industrial/organizational program, and applicants who are willing and able to contribute to both training areas will be especially desirable. Requirements include the Ph.D. in psychology, evidence of scholarly productivity commensurate with experience, potential to establish and maintain an independent program of research, and evidence of quality teaching experience/potential. Successful candidates will be expected to supervise dissertations and theses, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, actively seek extramural funding for their research program, and serve as a role model for Ph.D. students in a program that values research, teaching, and service. Information about the psychology department can be found at:

Here's information to complement the formal job ad. The core members of the Social wing of our combined Social/I-O program are Amanda Durik (intrinsic motivation/achievement), Brad Sagarin (social influence/evolutionary psychology), and John Skowronski (social cognition/autobiographical memory). Despite our small size, we are a productive group with some degree of national visibility (Brad is currently Associate Editor at Basic and Applied Social Psychology; John is currently Associate Editor at the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology). We are looking for someone to complement our existing areas of expertise; that person's expertise should also be compatible with the I-O wing of our program. Students in our program are trained in both Social and I-O, but typically specialize in one or the other. The fact that we are a combined program does not require that the social job candidate pursue applied research, nor does it require the teaching of applied topics. However, service on I-O-focused thesis and dissertation committees has been typical for members of the social wing of the program. Teaching load has typically been 2 courses per semester. The courses to be taught will be determined both by the successful applicant's area of expertise as well as by program and department needs. Should you have questions about us or our program, contact John Skowronski at jskowron@niu.edu.
