SS0073, Department of Psychology, Closing date: 30 September 2008

The Role

Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer in Psychology (equivalent to tenure-track Assistant Professor) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Kent.

The Department is keen to attract applicants with a strong research record and/or research potential. The Department’s research generally falls under the themes of social and cognitive psychology and its application to developmental, forensic and personality psychology. The Department currently has three vacant posts and will consider applications from any of the above areas. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute effectively to the department's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The Person

The successful candidates must have completed (or be about to complete) a PhD, or equivalent, in Psychology and have a proven record of publication and research achievement commensurate with their stage of career. A demonstrated ability to attract external research funding would be desirable.

The Department

The department has a thriving, internationally recognized research culture. As well as fortnightly research meetings within each of the broad research groups there is a departmental colloquium programme and annual lecture. We have a large number of international honorary members, visitors and collaborators, and regularly host international conferences. In recent years these have included the British Psychological Society Annual Conferences in Health Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Social Psychology, three medium sized meetings sponsored by the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology, and a seminar series funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Academy of Social Sciences. We are founding members of the International Graduate College, in conjunction with universities in Belgium and Germany.

In recent years the department has made significant investments in its research capacity and strengths, both in terms of faculty and equipment. The Social Psychology group was identified as meriting the top grade (5*) in 2001 and we have now invested significantly in our other key research areas. Since 2001 the department has doubled in size. The department is ranked 8th out of all the Psychology Departments in the UK in the 2008 Guardian League Tables.

We currently have an establishment of 33 academic staff, 40 PhD students and 10 independently funded research staff. Our annual student intake includes 60 students at Masters level. We have Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognition for all our Masters programmes, and BPS accreditation for our MSc programmes in Health Psychology and Forensic Psychology. We also have 10 PhD studentships currently funded by ESRC, which is an extremely high success rate compared with the national average in Psychology
