Introduction

Stigma continues to play an integral role in the multifaceted issues facing mental health. While identifying a clear operational definition of stigma has been a challenge in the field, the issues related to stigma as a whole include ignorance, prejudice and discrimination. These issues transfer within the daily practices within mental health via the clinicians, educators, researchers and policy makers, which grossly effect not only the mental health population, but society as a whole. The proposed title, Deconstructing Stigma in Mental Health, will address the history of stigma in mental health, the current perpetuation of stigma in mental health, the many facets of stigma highlighting areas such as gender, race, and class, and attempt to address a "reconstruction" of the mental health field post-stigma.

Objective

The proposed book will serve as an educational and practical resource for educators, researchers, and practitioners in the field of psychology, but also in intersectional fields related to culture and the human experience. The value of this proposed publication is three fold: (1) to provide historical context of stigma in the mental health field; (2) through intersectional collaboration, current issues and resolutions attempts will be explored to reduce stigma in multiple settings as they relate to mental health issues; and (3) serve as a platform for intersectional problem solving and collaboration for the deconstruction of stigma in mental health.

Target Audience

This publication is intended for mental health administrators and clinicians, researchers, educators, policy makers, social advocates and activists, social services, and intersectionality studies to include gender, race and class. Potential uses include: new research on stigma and its role in mental health; the perpetuation of stigma; barriers to reducing and/or preventing stigma; methods to reduce the perpetuation of stigma in mental health; and the intersectionality of stigma to include gender, race and class.
