Dear Colleagues,
I would like to make you aware of two positions that are open in the Directorate of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences at the National Science Foundation.
The first, and by far most important as far as Social Psychology is concerned, is the position of Division Director of the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences. Our program is housed in this division, along with developmental psych, cognitive neuroscience, etc. This person is in the position of influencing policy and creating new opportunities.
Statement of Duties: Serves as a member of the SBE Directorate leadership team and as the Foundation’s principal spokesperson in the area of behavioral and cognitive sciences. Provides leadership and direction to the NSF Division responsible for funding research and education activities, both nationally and internationally, to develop and advance scientific knowledge focusing on human cognition, language, social behavior and culture, as well as research on the interactions between human societies and the physical societies and the physical environment. Assesses needs and trends involving the behavioral sciences, implements overall strategic planning and policy setting for the Division, provides leadership and guidance to Division staff members, determines funding requirements, prepares and justifies budget estimates, balances program needs, allocates resources, oversees the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declinations, and represents NSF to relevant external groups. Fosters partnerships with other Divisions, Directorates, Federal agencies, scientific organizations, and the academic community.
See http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2005/s20050127/s20050127ltd.txt for further information on this position and the application process.
The second opening is the position of program director of cross-directorate activities in the SBE directorate. The Cross Directorate Activities (CDA) program encompasses a collection of Foundation-wide activities that provide support for human resource development and infrastructure improvement. CDA houses and provides information about various NSF-wide programs in which the Division of Social and Economic Sciences and the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences participate. CDA administers some programs directly and coordinates other programs aimed at Foundation-wide goals of increasing the participation of women, minorities, and the disabled in science and engineering; encouraging and rewarding promising new faculty; supporting undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral activities; and improving the infrastructure of the social and behavioral sciences.
For more information on the position and application process, see http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2005/e20050143/e20050143.txt.
If you would like to chat about these positions, feel free to contact me at astory@nsf.gov or at 703-292-7249.
Sincerely,
Amber Story
