2nd Annual PSYC Good Deed Day

Dear Friends,

For those of you who participated in PSYC Good Deed Day last year, we're doing it again this fall. The date is set for October 7, 2026, to align with the Wednesday of NAMI's Mental Health Awareness Week in the U.S. If that day isn't convenient, no worries: The good deed tracker (see below) will be live before and after Oct 7th.

If your department didn't participate last year, I'm formally inviting you to join us for a day of doing good deeds, volunteerism, organizing donation drives, and/or promoting mental wellness through kindness.

Last year over 100 departments participated by organizing events in their own department and broader communities, or by encouraging their students to do the same. So far this year, we have over 80 departments signed up, but there is room for more. You can sign up at go.umd.edu/gdd_sign_up -- just click the yellow button that says "Add my Department", fill out the linked Google Form, and in about 15 minutes, your department will be added to the map. Participating doesn't require a formal commitment from your department. Individual people or labs are invited to participate too!

What you do to promote kindness and good deeds locally on good deed day is totally up to you. But, to make this a bit more engaging for everyone, we created a tracker at go.umd.edu/gdd where people can log their good deeds, along with a kindness map so you can monitor the "hotspots" for kindness throughout the day (and week) of PSYC Good Deed Day.

Finally, for those of you who want to help promote the event, I encourage you to reach out to contacts at local high schools, community colleges, teaching colleges, or institutions outside of the U.S.

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to mdougher@umd.edu. Always happy to chat.

Best,
Mike Dougherty
