I write with sad news that a long-time member of Yale's Department of Psychology and a social psychologist that many of you knew well, Bob Abelson, passed away last week. Bob contributed to our understanding of attitudes and persuasion, social cognition, cognitive science, and statistical methods, and influenced many generations of scholars.
Bob received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1953, working with John Tukey among others. He came to Yale as an assistant to Carl Hovland to conduct research on attitudes and attitude change, and in 1954 was offered a position as Assistant Professor. Bob rose through the ranks to become the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology, and during his time in the department served as Director of Graduate Studies and Acting Chair.
Bob's work spanned many areas, but the consistent theme was his devotion to understanding beliefs and ideology. He was involved in work on hate crimes, political attitudes, stigma, and artificial intelligence. Bob was a highly innovative scholar, known for unique approaches to statistics. The 40 years he was active in the department left an indelible stamp on students and colleagues alike.
Funeral arrangements are not yet available.
