We regret to inform you that we have lost a great colleague and friend. Andy Baum passed away unexpectedly on November 22, 2010. He will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held at the University of Texas at Arlington at 2:00 pm on December 6.
Andy Baum received his B.S. in Psychology in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1974. He made major contributions to the fields of environmental and health psychology. Early in his career he conducted much influential work on crowding. More recently he fostered projects to better understand the basis of individual susceptibility to cancer, the conditions that promote cancer development, and the social and behavioral barriers to effective prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer. His work was recognized with numerous awards from the American Psychological Association and other professional societies. Baum authored or co-authored more than 200 scientific articles, chapters and books and was editor of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology and Journal of Applied BioBehavioral Research.
Prior to joining the University of Texas at Arlington in 2006 as the Jenkins Garrett Professor of Psychology, he began his career as Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience, and Assistant to the President for Research and Sponsored Programs at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he received the Achievement, Outstanding Service and Distinguished Service medals. In 1993 he joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, where he became Deputy Director for Cancer Control and Population Sciences and Director of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center.
