TITLE: Research Scientist (all ranks)

DUTIES: The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) conducts state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals. CASL is currently seeking to expand its multi-disciplinary research team with a scientist in industrial and organizational (IO) psychology and/or social psychology. The research scientist will contribute to existing and new projects, consistent with his or her skills and interests. The following are examples of research projects that could benefit from an IO and/or social psychology perspective. Examining effects of stress, fatigue, and workplace design on working in foreign languages; assessing aptitude and personality characteristics for high-level adult second-language learning; integrating human language technology into the workplace; optimizing individual and team work in the area of summarization and translation; determining conditions for optimal knowledge transfer of CASL products into the working environment of government language professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D., a record of individual research achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research program across areas related to the study of language and analysis. Appointments are as research faculty members of the University of Maryland and carry the title of assistant, associate, or senior research scientist, as appropriate. Affiliations with University of Maryland academic departments are encouraged. Exceptional candidates with national standing may be considered for tenure-track appointments in a department on a limited, case-by-case basis. Applications will be reviewed when they are complete and interviews will continue on a rolling basis. Most appointments will begin in Fall 2007, but earlier starting dates are possible.
