We are currently seeking an Education Specialist for the Tsunami Psychosocial Support Program (PSP) for Sri Lanka.

JOB SUMMARY:
The American Red Cross Tsunami Recovery Program (TRP) has been established to direct the organization’s response to the December 26, 2004 South Asia tsunami disaster. The TRP activities will focus on integrated community recovery and preparedness interventions in tsunami affected countries in Asia and East Africa in collaboration with Red Cross and non-Red Cross partners. The Psychosocial Support Program Education Specialist for Sri Lanka will be part of the Maldives/Sri Lanka Delegation, and will be responsible for developing the teacher training portion of the American Red Cross package of psychosocial support interventions. This position reports to the PSP Country Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Education Specialist will be responsible for the development of modules to be adjunct to the National Training Curriculum in the three National Colleges in Kalutara, Galle and Matara Districts of Sri Lanka.

Specific responsibilities include:

Adapt the American Red Cross Teacher training curriculum to make it linguistically, culturally and technically appropriate for Sri Lanka.

Develop five adjunct modules to the National Teacher Training curriculum (Qualitative Measurement of Resilience, Educational psychology focusing on Rogers and Karkuff, Psychological First aid, Inclusive methods of teaching, Sociology of education or the role of the school as a community change agent).

Conduct training sessions, table top exercises and at least one live exercise in a school for pre service teachers in these colleges.

Supervise and guide the trained Master trainers to conduct pre – service teachers training.

Assist in restructuring the existing NCE syllabus to include participatory approaches, and enhancement of anticipatory and preventive behaviors in children.

Provide technical assistance to the material development staff based in the Kalutara branch office by ensuring the technical quality of the prototypes.

Provide supervision to trained pre service teachers in order to develop a model school program in each of the target school district.

Provide timely and sound technical assistance to the pre – service teacher during internship and monitor program activities.

Provide consultation to local SLRCS PSP Education Officers in the target districts, to serve as the bridges between pre-service and in-service in the target schools.

Liaise between the colleges, SLRCS and other American Red Cross staff.

Report and document the development of the process to the ARC Country Manager.

Provides consultation to the Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education as requested by the Ministry authorities or SLRCS.

QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS in psychology with a masters degree preferred, or a licensed psychologist with at least two years teaching or training experience. Three to five years of experience in Psychosocial Support Programs. Two years experience working in a developing country required, with international experience preferred. Strong program management and project design experience is essential with proven track record of successful teamwork needed. Experience cultivating and maintaining effective and positive relationships with partner organizations and government bodies required. Knowledge of American Red Cross operating procedures helpful. Strong written and verbal communication skills essential. Must have the ability to work in an environment of diverse languages and cultures. Work experience in Asia preferred. This position is based in Kalutara, Sri Lanka and requires 25% travel out of Kalutara.
