| Administrative Director | | | | | | | Employment Opportunities Administrative Director Job Opening Classification: Exempt, Full-Time Reports to: Executive Committee Salary Range: Negotiable, depending on experience Summary: The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) is seeking an Administrative Director to oversee all administrative functions and general operations of the SPSSI Central Office located in Washington, D.C. SPSSI is an international group of nearly 3,000 psychologists, allied scientists, students, and others who share a common interest in research on the psychological aspects of important social issues. SPSSI engages in a wide range of activities to use theory and practice to address these social issues. With annual operating budget in excess of $600,000, a policy fellow and three administrative staff, SPSSI relies heavily on members’ active participation as volunteer leaders in the Society’s governing Council, committees, task forces and leadership roles in carrying out its mission and activities. The Administrative Director is the executive that oversees SPSSI’s day-to-day operations; establishes procedures to attain SPSSI goals; plans, organizes, coordinates, and insures the implementation of policies and procedures; and proposes action to serve member needs and promote SPSSI's mission. Specific activities include: * Supervise, hire and fire, and conduct performance appraisals of SPSSI’s administrative and membership support staff; * Direct all business affairs of the Central Office and provides business counsel to the Executive Committee and the Council; * Work with committees to accomplish goals; * Oversee all financial operations interfacing with accountants for accounts receivable and payable; * Take responsibility for cost control and assist SPSSI’s Secretary-Treasurer in fiscal planning and budget development; * Establish and maintain effective internal controls, policies and procedures to ensure that financial resources are appropriately utilized; * Implement systems to define issues that need to be addressed and facilitate timely decision-making and systems of accountability; * Develop policies and procedures needed to manage the organization’s current activities and its future plans; * When appropriate, engage lawyers, accountants, auditors, and other consultants; * Update Administrative Handbook, Policy Manual and By-Laws with approved changes; * Help coordinate and attend SPSSI annual and midyear Council meetings; * Staff the following standing committees: Executive, Publications, Finance & Audit, Elections and Nomination; * Prepare routine and advanced correspondence including letters, memoranda, and reports; * Secure vendors for supplies and SPSSI activities, delegating or coordinating as appropriate; * Oversee all contracts; * Arrange and/or supervise SPSSI’s property management (cleaning, refuse removal, yard services, building maintenance, repairs, routine dealings with tenants); * Ensure that SPSSI’s public information and materials (website, newsletter, brochure, etc.) are up-to-date, standardized, and error free; * Carry out other duties as directed by the Secretary-Treasurer, officers, and the SPSSI Council; * Coordinate and support (or oversee coordination and support of) volunteer activities; * Prepare or oversee preparation of minutes for Council meetings; maintain organizational records; * Coordinate with outside organizations (e.g. American Psychological Association, Blackwell Publishing); * Coordinate with and provide support to planners of biennial conference. Position Qualifications: * Bachelors degree. Masters degree in Business or Public Administration or Nonprofit Management preferred; * Five or more years of direct management and supervision experience, preferably in a membership association or other nonprofit organization; * Demonstrated leadership, coordination and negotiation abilities; * Strong verbal and written communications skills; * Experience in budgeting and financial management; * Proven project-management skills; * Ability to multi-task and work independently, efficiently under deadline.
