Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position

Job Description and Qualifications

The Department of Psychology at Colorado State University invites applications for one tenure-track assistant professor position in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology. The person will be expected to teach organizational psychology and psychometric theory, conduct research in areas of organizational psychology, advise masters and doctoral students in the I/O program, establish relationships with organizations and obtain external funding to support research and graduate education, and collaborate with colleagues in the other programs in the Department and throughout the University.

The successful candidate will have (1) a Ph.D. with a focus on industrial/organizational psychology, (2) evidence of ability to teach organizational psychology, (3) evidence of ability to teach psychometric theory, (4) an active research program in organizational psychology, possibly including one of the following areas: work and organizational attitudes, organizational theory and effectiveness, organizational design and change, leadership, team effectiveness, (5) ability to teach research methods or history of psychology, (6) a strong commitment toward obtaining external funding for research, and (7) a desire to engage in collaborative research with colleagues in other disciplines in psychology and other departments.

Program Description

The I/O psychology program at CSU adheres to the Scientist/Practitioner model of education and training. Students are expected to develop research skills to understand human behavior in work settings. Solid training in research design, measurement, and statistics is provided. Theories and research in both industrial (personnel) and organizational psychology, and the integration of these perspectives are emphasized. Students are provided opportunities to gain experience in applied work settings that provide exposure to real-world problems and development of professional skills. Under-girding this training, students take a series of courses in basic areas of psychology, including social, personality, cognitive psychology.

Special Qualifications

We are interested in persons who can foster collaboration within the I/O program, across other programs in the Department, and throughout the University. The Department has graduate programs in Applied Social, Cognitive, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Counseling. Faculty members in the Department have a history of collaboration with colleagues in Management, Information Systems, Environmental Sciences, Education, and Engineering. The University is emphasizing super-clusters of collaborating researchers in information science and technology; environmental sustainability; agriculture, nutrition, health, and well-being; and biomedicine and infectious disease. Applicants with compatible interests are being sought. While actual course assignments will vary, a typical assignment could include such graduate and undergraduate courses as Organizational Psychology, Psychometric Theory, Research Methods, Introductory Psychology, and topical seminars of interest to the candidate. Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students is expected.

Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology is in the College of Natural Sciences along with seven other departments: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. The Department serves approximately 1100 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate students, with approximately 30 full-time faculty members distributed across five doctoral programs: (1) Applied Social Psychology, (2) Behavioral Neuroscience, (3) Cognitive Psychology, (4) Counseling Psychology, and (5) Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The Department also houses the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research, a University designated program of research and scholarly excellence that concentrates on social problems that affect rural and minority ethnic communities; and the Colorado Injury Control Research Center which is funded by CDC and is dedicated to reducing the occurrence and severity of injuries in rural areas of the Rocky Mountain region, particularly among underserved populations. The Department encourages interaction and collaboration across graduate programs and with other groups on campus, and as new faculty members are hired, one objective is to further strengthen this interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department has over 100,000 square feet of research and office space, which spans three wings of a single building. Included are modern research laboratories in cognitive psychology, sensation and perception, social and environmental psychology, and behavioral neuroscience. There are also modern computer facilities and equipment available for the undergraduate instructional laboratories and teaching environments with state-of-the-art multimedia capabilities and a rich library of teaching resources.
