The Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking two tenure-track assistant professors with three years or less post-Ph.D. experience, whose general areas of specialty are within Social Psychology. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Social Psychology, or a related discipline. We seek an energetic scholar to join our social psychology program, which currently has strengths in applied social psychology, community processes, and organizational psychology. Individuals from all areas of social psychology should apply. Strong preference will be given to applicants with (a) established fundable research programs or the potential for such; (b) strong quantitative skills and teaching interest; and (c) contribution to two of the Department's areas of primary research strength.

The Department's three primary areas of research concentration are (1) health psychology, behavior medicine, substance abuse, and psychopharmacology; (2) community interventions, prevention efforts, and group dynamics, especially in an urban environment; and (3) children, youth, couples, and families. Candidates for both positions must have a strong research program related to one of the Department's research concentrations and show evidence of success in publishing their work in refereed journals and edited volumes. There is opportunity (and some expectation) to collaborate with colleagues both in Psychology and in the other disciplines and schools at this university including the university's new school of public health. The positions will involve teaching at both the undergraduate and doctoral level and advising graduate students in their research and training. High quality teaching (at both graduate and undergraduate levels) and research are both necessary to obtain tenure.

The Social Psychology division is one division of three in the General Experimental program (the others being Biopsychology and Developmental Psychology). The other two programs are Clinical and Counseling Psychology (both APA-accredited). The Department has 30 tenure-track faculty members, 120 graduate doctoral students, and. over 1200 undergraduate majors. Applicants should submit a statement of research interests, teaching philosophy and interests, a current curriculum vita, representative publications, and at least three letters of reference to Dr. Faye Belgrave, Chair of the Search Committee for Social Psychology, at the Department of Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth University, P. O. Box 842018, Richmond, VA 23284-2018. Additional information about the department and the program can be found at our Homepage address:

Application deadline is April 30, 2005, or until the positions are filled, but one or more qualified candidates for each position may be invited for interview before that time.

Virginia Commonwealth University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
