Contact Person: Mary Elizabeth Mason
Date Posted: December 8th, 2004
Closing Date: January 1st, 2005

Biomedical and behavioral research scientists interested in careers in science administration are encouraged to apply for the Review Internship Program at the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). CSR manages the peer review groups (study sections) that evaluate the vast majority of investigator-initiated grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This is an extremely important activity since the result of the peer review is the primary factor in determining which research NIH funds. Applications submitted by January 1, 2005, will be considered for positions starting in July 2005.

Program Benefits

Interns will work with a diverse and dedicated group of scientists in their fields and help coordinate state-of-the-art scientific review meetings. Interns also will be mentored by an experienced SRA and receive hands-on experience --

o Managing a small study section or Special Emphasis Panel

o Recruiting scientists to serve on peer review groups

o Editing summary statements

o Assisting in referral of applications to review groups

All interns will receive 1- to 2-year appointments, work fulltime, and receive competitive salaries and full benefits. All interns will participate in the 3-month SRA training program as well as in weekly question and answer sessions and other activities to learn about CSR and NIH. They also will be offered opportunities to attend two scientific meetings a year. Those appointed for a second year will work more independently and may be offered opportunities to work in an NIH Institute or Center helping to coordinate an NIH research program.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be researchers with a Ph.D. or other comparable professional degree and have at least 4 years of postdoctoral scientific experience. United States citizenship is not required, but non-citizens must obtain an appropriate visa. Selection criteria will include the following:

o A strong scientific background in one or more areas reviewed by CSR

o Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

o Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently

o Capability to analyze information and solve problems

o Ability to interact with the scientific community in identifying and recruiting reviewers.
