Fixed Term for 30 months
Applications are invited for a Research Fellowship to work with Professor Rupert Brown on an ESRC funded project studying changes in young immigrant children’s identities and the consequences of these for well-being, mental health and social integration. Applicants should have a first degree in Psychology and, ideally, a postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD), and some research experience with young children.

Professor Rupert Brown has recently been awarded a grant from the ESRC to study transitions in young immigrant children’s identities. This grant is part of the Identities and Social Action Programme directed by Margaret Wetherell of the Open University. The project, which will be conducted jointly with colleagues at the University of Kent, involves a longitudinal study of immigrant children (aged 5-11 years). The focus will be on how they manage identity changes during the acculturation process and the consequences of those changes for their well-being, mental health and social integration.
The Research Fellow will have a background in social or developmental psychology. S/he will have responsibility for helping to develop the measures to be used in the interviews with children, negotiating access to primary schools, conducting the interviews (with the help of another research assistant), and assisting in the analysis, reporting and dissemination of the findings. S/he will be an integral part of the project team that consists of the project directors (Rupert Brown, Adam Rutland, Charles Watters), the other Research Fellow based in Kent, and two other research assistants (to be appointed). The requirements for this challenging position are as follows:
ESSENTIAL
·First degree in Psychology
·Competence in quantitative methodology and statistics (especially SPSS)
·Ability to interview young children
·Ability to work without close supervision and as part of a team
·Field research experience in developmental or social psychology
DESIRABLE
·Postgraduate qualification in Psychology or Research Methods (Masters or PhD)
·Experience in qualitative research methods
·Familiarity with research literatures on ethnic identity and acculturation
·Experience in writing for publication
·Good communication skills (for negotiating research access and dissemination to academic and practitioner audiences)
·Clean driving licence and access to a car
