The Department of Social Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has a vacancy for an:

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (1.0) (f/m)

As of July 1, 2004, the Department of Social Psychology includes eight faculty members: Caryl Rusbult (Chair), Paul Van Lange, Catrin Finkenauer, Sander Koole, Wilco Van Dijk, Esther Van Leeuwen, Jan Willem Van Prooijen, and Natalie Wyer;, a professorial fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (Gun Semin); two professors who hold a special chair within the social psychology program (John Cacioppo, Eliot Smith), two Post-Docs, and 14 Ph.D. students.

The research program of the department focuses on social cognition, communication, and interdependence in order to enhance the understanding of the regulation of social interaction. The Department of Social Psychology recently developed a Research Master’s in Social Psychology, which has been accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). This research master is characterized by a strong international orientation, and includes courses on various approaches central to social psychology, such as evolutionary psychology, social neuroscience, motivational science, and social interdependence. The Department of Social Psychology offers also several courses in the Bachelors program, including introduction to social psychology, cultural psychology, communication, social cognition, interpersonal processes, attitudes, and group processes. The department has at one’s disposal extremely well-equipped research laboratory facilities. These include, amongst others, two completely upgraded computer laboratories consisting of more than 20 soundproof cubicles and advanced equipment for the measurement of response latencies, physiological measures, and neurological processes.

JOB DESCRIPTION

For this position, we expect the assistant professor to:

- teach introductory courses in the Bachelors program (comparable to two 10-lecture courses)

- supervise Bachelor’s-theses, and possibly PhD-dissertations

- conduct research in the field of social psychology

- publish in journals central to social psychology

- make a contribution to organizational tasks within the department

REQUIREMENTS

We are ideally seeking an applicant who:

- has completed a Ph.D. in social psychology or a related field, or is expected to do so within - the next academic year

- has accumulated teaching experience, preferably in diverse courses

- has some experience with supervision of research projects

- has (co-)authored articles that have been (or will be) published in internationally visible journals

DETAILS

The contract will be for 5 years. The preferred starting date is September 1, 2004.

Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and career stage.
