The successful candidate will participate in a NIH grant-funded project that involves a national survey of men who have sex with men, health and structural county-level data, and social media postings. The research involves conducting both primary data collection assessing HIV protective behaviors and advancing psychological theory about persuasion and behavior change, as well as secondary data analyses on a large geographical scale to develop machine learning models of message efficacy and dissemination. The Researchers will collaborate with the project investigators (Dr. Dolores Albarracin – Professor of Psychology, Business and Medicine, Department of Psychology, Dr. Man-pui Sally Chan – Research Assistant Professor of Psychology, Department of Psychology, Dr. Chengxiang Zhai – Professor of Computer Science, Department of Computer Science, Dr. Bo Li, Department of Statistics) to answer research questions, design studies, prepare publications, and write reports. Researchers will have an opportunity to work with our highly interdisciplinary, collaborative, and dynamic research groups, which meet regularly and include leading scientists and trainees with expertise in several disciplines including: social and health psychology, epidemiology, social determinants of health, natural language processing, image processing, and machine learning. Basic Qualifications 1) Ph.D. in psychology, communication, information science, computer science, social epidemiology or a related field, 2) Experience managing and programming large-scale data sets in Python or R (previous experience with other programming languages is a plus), 3) demonstrated ability to implement and interpret advanced statistics; and 4) excellent writing skills. Additional Qualifications Interest in and experience in analyzing social media data (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, and reddit, etc.) and contributing to behavioral science theory are a plus.
