The Research School of Psychology is seeking a Research Fellow (until the end of 2014) to join an international research team investigating in new ways issues of diversity, discrimination and building social harmony. This project is funded by the Australian Research Council and involves working directly with the Australian Federal Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The role presents a unique opportunity to build and expand partnerships between social psychology and policy domains. The project involves Kate Reynolds and Emina Subasic at ANU and two partner investigators: Miles Hewstone at University of Oxford and Linda Tropp at University of Massachusetts. The linkage partner is the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

The successful candidate will advise on, develop, and conduct a number of experimental field trials that investigate the effectiveness of social-identity based community interventions to enhance tolerance between different ethnic groups. We are looking for a candidate with an interest in social and behavioural change research in areas of prejudice, discrimination and building social harmony. Furthermore the successful candidate will have knowledge of social identity and self-categorization theories and their application to issues of intergroup conflict and co-operation in laboratory and/or field settings. The candidate will also have experience (or an ability to gain such experience) in conducting field (experimental, longitudinal) research and will be passionate about seeing such research come alive in applied, policy-relevant settings. The position requires preparation of publications and presentations for an academic as well as policy audience.
