The Bridgepoint Design and Health Research Group: The Bridgepoint Health focus on complex chronic disease is quite unique internationally. A new $1.2 billion state-of-the-art health facility is being constructed that combines careful engineering and design while focusing on our patient population and their specific needs -- a blend of functionality and esthetics. A recent article in the National Post cited the Bridgepoint Hospital as one of the “world’s most interesting projects” according to the Infrastructure 100 report:

Facility Design and Health Research Group: The Facility Design and Health Research Group at the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation are examining the role of facility design in rehabilitation, management, and well-being in the context of a complex chronic disease patient population. The multidisciplinary team consists of experts in the social sciences, research methodology, health research, health care management, and architectural design. The core research team (listed alphabetically) includes: • Dr. Celeste Alvaro, Research Scientist and Lead Researcher for the Facility Design and Health Team, Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation; • Cheryl Atkinson, Assistant Professor, Department of Architectural Science, Ryerson University; • Susan Brown, Director, Transitional Planning and Operational Readiness • Greg Colucci, Lead Architect, Diamond and Schmitt Architects; • Clifford Harvey, OAA MRAIC, Senior Architect, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care • Dr. Tony Khouri, Chief Facilities Planning & Redevelopment Officer, Bridgepoint Health • Dr. Renée Lyons, Bridgepoint Chair in Complex Chronic Disease Research and TD Financial Group Scientific Director, Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation; Professor (Status), Dalla Lana School of Public Health; and • Mason White, Assistant Professor, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto.

Our primary objective at this stage of the research is to develop a list of design elements and the rationale for their inclusion in the new Bridgepoint Hospital design. These design elements will inform the selection of indicators related to patient outcomes, staff outcomes, organizational outcomes, and community outcomes to be assessed in the context of the move from the current hospital to the new Bridgepoint Hospital; with a specific focus on examining the impact of the design on health and well-being, safety and other physical and social elements of prevention and care in complex chronic disease.

PDF Description: The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will engage in research development with the Facility Design and Health Research Group at the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation. The PDF will examine the role of facility design in rehabilitation and management of context of a complex chronic disease under the supervision of Dr. Celeste Alvaro (Research Scientist) and Dr. Renee Lyons (Scientific Director). The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to apply for funding for the second year. The PDF will engage in research development with the Facility Design and Health Research Group to:

 Facilitate a systematic literature review and synthesis related to the impact of design on health and well-being, safety and other physical and social elements of prevention and care related to complex chronic disease.

 Prepare research grants and REB applications for Facility Design and Health Research Projects;

 Contribute to the research design, data collection, and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data;

 Working with experts in the field of architecture and facility design, psychology (particularly social psychology, environmental psychology, clinical health psychology), health, and complex chronic disease;

 Assist with the preparation and development of reports, presentations, and peer review journal articles.

PDF Qualifications: • A completed (or soon to be completed) Ph.D. in a social science and health related discipline; • Preference will be given to those with expertise and/or interest in environmental and/or health psychology, health research, and applied research - particularly as it relates to building design/architecture; • Considerable experience and demonstrated proficiency in research design, research methods (both quantitative and qualitative), data collection and data analysis; • Extensive experience in conducting literature searches and literature reviews; • Experience with proposal development, REB applications, and research grant writing; • Experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS) and qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas-TI); • Excellent organizational abilities, excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively; • Additional background in healthcare and knowledge of health care systems as they relate to complex chronic disease is considered an asset.

Candidates with suitable qualifications are invited to submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, and the names of three references by Friday, April 29th, 2011 (or until a suitable candidate is found) to: Dr. Celeste Alvaro, Research Scientist Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation, Bridgepoint Health 14 St. Matthews Rd, Toronto, ON M4M 2B5 Email: Research@bridgepointhealth.ca For information about the Collaboratory for Research and Innovation at Bridgepoint Health, please visit:
