 Research Scientist/Professional Research Assistant
Institution/Organization: University of New Mexico/CASAA
Job Location: New Mexico, U.S.A.
Contact Person: Renee Magnan
Date Posted: July 17th, 2010
Web Site: http://www.unm.edu/~abryan/labcontact.htm

The Social, Health, and Evolutionary Research Program of Albuquerque (SHERPA) at the University of New Mexico, in conjunction with the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions (CASAA), is hiring a full-time Research Scientist 1 (i.e., professional research assistant) for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal to begin as soon as possible. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who have received their bachelor’s degrees to gain experience in psychological research and prepare for graduate school. Please forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested in this position.

The SHERPA lab is directed by Dr. Angela Bryan and currently consists of 3 postdocs, 6 full-time professional research assistants, 3 graduate students and multiple undergraduate research assistants. The goal of the current project is to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted sexual risk, alcohol risk, and marijuana risk reduction interventions on behavior among juvenile justice-involved adolescents.

For further information about the SHERPA Lab, please visit our website at:

http://www.unm.edu/~abryan/labcontact.htm

Duties will include, but are not limited to:
(1) Conducting follow-up assessments in the field with research participants, who are mostly adolescent males in juvenile justice programs
(2) Traveling to probation offices, participants’ homes, and treatment facilities to administer follow-up assessments
(3) Scheduling follow-up sessions
(4) Maintaining contact with participants in the intervals between follow-up assessments
(5) Data management and tracking of participants
(6) Assisting with participant recruitment and consent procedures
(7) Serving as a liaison between multiple programs within the Albuquerque juvenile justice system
(8) Ensuring that correct procedures for the protection of human participants are being followed
(9) Managing undergraduate research assistant and volunteers working on the project
(10) Conducting experimental sessions with participants

Given the number of duties, and the complexity of the project, it is extremely important that these individuals be organized, detail-oriented, responsible, able to take initiative and work independently, and able to manage time effectively. In our experience, successful research staff members are highly self-motivated and out-going individuals who are able to be excited about the projects. Supervision is variable depending on the project.

Requirements:
You must have a BA or BS, have at least 6 months of experience in psychological research, be willing to work evening and weekend hours when necessary, and demonstrate adequate writing skills. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.
