The Mind, Culture and Society Lab in the Psychology Department at Stanford University anticipates hiring a full-time Lab Manager for a one-year term beginning August, 2007. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent bachelor's-level graduate with a strong background in social science research to build experience and relationships in preparation for grad school.
The Mind, Culture and Society Lab is a co-lab, run jointly by two professors, Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt and Dr. Hazel Markus, and consisting of approximately 7 graduate students and between 30 and 40 undergrad RAs on average. We conduct a wide variety of experimental research in social psychology, with an emphasis on culture and race. Responsibilities
About 25% of the Lab Manager's time will be spent recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate research assistants for the lab. The Lab Manager also conducts weekly lab meetings and administers payment to work study students. About 25% will be spent providing direct research support to the MCS Lab co-directors (literature searches, developing study materials, preparing course materials, assisting with grant writing and IRB submission, etc.). An additional 25% of the Lab Manager's time will be spent providing direct research support to the faculty and graduate students in the MCS Lab (data coding and entry, running experiment sessions, designing studies, etc.). And the final 25% will involve administrative tasks associated with running subject pools and shared lab facilities (e-mail and communications, website maintenance, coordinating lab space scheduling, etc.). Training will be provided. Hours are pretty flexible, and the Lab Manager will have opportunities to sit in on lab meetings, seminars, and (with faculty permission) occasional lecture and graduate-level courses. Supervision may be minimal or intensive, depending on the project. The position is a one-year fixed term (renewable).
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be an energetic, responsible, independent self-starter and multi-tasker who can take initiative, see projects through to completion, and understand the unique priorities and demands of lab-based experimentation. Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, SPSS, Dreamweaver, Endnote, Remark, Direct RT, MatLab, etc., preferred) and knowledge of research design and statistics are essential; experience with computer-based experimentation and web studies is desirable. Ability to balance multiple, competing projects and supervisors a must.
