The Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama has an opening for a tenure-track, assistant professor in social psychology starting August 16, 2008, subject to availability of funding. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research mentoring, and development of an independent research program. Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in psychology, demonstrate clear potential for distinguished scientist careers, and provide evidence of the ability to attract external funding. Applicants who have the ability and interest to teach graduate level statistics courses are encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will join five other Psychology faculty and three faculty in the Institute for Social Science Research who comprise our new Social Psychology program. Candidates in any area of social psychology are encouraged to apply, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests expand our current expertise in the effects of media on social behavior. Applicants with research interests in the areas of media, health psychology, attitudes and social cognition, or intergroup relations are especially encouraged to apply. The Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama is an active, collegial department whose faculty and students are engaged in an array of clinical and experimental research, including $3.3 million in externally-funded projects in the last year. There are 26 faculty, 85 graduate students, and 450 undergraduate majors in the department. The department has two graduate programs: an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology program (with concentration areas in Aging, Clinical Health, Clinical Child, and Psychology-Law) and an Experimental Psychology program (with concentration areas in Cognitive, Social, and Developmental). The department has been recognized for its academic and research strengths by the University and has been given supplementary funding to expand. The University is located in Tuscaloosa, a city of 100,000 that was recently named an All America City by the National Civic League.

Applications should include a letter outlining qualifications, research interests, teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and potential fit with the department. Additionally, applications should include a current vita, selected reprints, and 3-5 letters of recommendation.
