The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB), the organization comprised of all the psychology licensing boards in the United States and Canada, is seeking volunteers with expertise and experience in writing multiple-choice test items/questions for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology Part 1 – Knowledge (EPPP-1).
Item writers are selected to represent a range of geographic, work, demographic, cultural, and professional diversities. Writers are professors, researchers, practicing psychologists, etc. Early career psychologists are encouraged to apply because they represent the largest portion of those for whom the EPPP-1 is intended.
Item writers are professionals working in one or more of the knowledge domains that are assessed by the EPPP-1. The knowledge domains are:
1. Biological Bases of Behavior
2. Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior
3. Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior
4. Growth and Lifespan Development
5. Assessment and Diagnosis
6. Treatment, Intervention, and Prevention and Supervision
7. Research Methods and Statistics
8. Ethical/Legal/Professional Issues
Item writers meet once each year—usually in the Spring, at the ASPPB office in Tyrone, Georgia—for a 2-day item writing workshop. Each writer drafts 10-15 new items prior to the workshop, and at the workshop, these items are reviewed and revised—tweaked in a group session with item-writer colleagues from the same knowledge domain. For the item writing workshop, the ASPPB covers travel and accommodation costs.
I used to be a writer for Domain 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. It provided an opportunity to write-create-debate items with passionate colleagues, each of them with specialized expertise and experience and a unique perspective.
With this call for volunteers, we are reaching out for writers with expertise and experience related to Domains 1, 2 and 3. Please write back if you would like more info about any of these knowledge domains, or about becoming an EPPP1 item writer.
If you are interested in becoming an EPPP1 item writer for one of these domains, please send a brief note to indicate your domain of expertise and a copy of your current CV to asppb.eppp1@gmail.com. Your note will come to me, Peter Graf, Chair of the EPPP1 Item Writing Committee (IDC).
Item writers are vetted by me as the Chair of the IDC, in collaboration with the chair of the pertinent domain (each domain has between 3 and 7 writers, plus a chair) and with Hao Song, the ASBBC Associate Executive Officer of Examination Services.
