 2 Assistant Professor Positions
Institution/Organization: University of British Columbia
Job Location: Canada
Job Type: Tenure-Track
Contact Person: Darrin R. Lehman
Date Posted: September 16th, 1999

The Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia is advertising two tenure-track faculty positions that are likely to be of interest to individuals trained in social psychology.

One position is targeted especially to researchers in the area of cultural psychology. The second is targeted especially to researchers in the areas of judgment/decision-making and reasoning. Both of these job descriptions are construed broadly in an effort to attract top candidates from social, as well as cognitive and developmental psychology backgrounds.

Social psychologists who do work pertaining to culture in any way are strongly encouraged to apply for the cultural psychology position. Social psychologists who do work pertaining to the cognitive processes of social inference (or social cognition more generally) are strongly encouraged to apply for the jdm/reasoning position.

Successful candidates will join a strong psychology department committed to building on existing strengths. The department has graduate programs in several areas, including social-personality, cognitive science, and developmental. The following social/personality psychologists are on faculty at UBC: Jennifer Campbell, Peter Darke, Anita DeLongis, Don Dutton, Dale Griffin, Darrin Lehman, Del Paulhus, Dan Perlman, and Mark Schaller. A great deal of information about the department is available on the World Wide Web: http://www.psych.ubc.ca.

The advertisement for these positions will appear shortly in professional publications, and a condensed version of the ad is included here:

The Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia invites applications for tenure-track positions, which will begin on July 1, 2000. Subject to the availability of funds, the positions are budgeted at the Assistant Professor level with the possibility of an appointment at a higher rank for a female applicant with exceptional qualifications. We are seeking individuals with strong research records appropriate to a research-oriented doctoral program, who have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and to supervision of graduate student research. Applicants whose research can help build bridges with other UBC departments and institutes are of particular interest.

Candidates are invited to apply in the following areas: (1) Cultural psychology, (2) Judgment and decision-making, reasoning, or other higher cognitive processes.

Salaries commensurate with experience. The University of British Columbia hires on the basis of merit and it is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, samples of their scholarly work, and at least three letters of recommendation, prior to December 1, 1999 (but ideally asap), to:
