Applications are invited for a new academic post in the Department of Psychology to commence in October 2004. It is anticipated that the new appointment will be someone who has active research interests in the area of Social and/or Health Psychology.

The salary for the post will be on the scale of Lecturer Grade B.

The Department is seeking applicants with strong research potential; particularly those who will complement the work of our Social and Health Psychology research group, currently comprising Professor Sheina Orbell, Dr Marco Perugini and Dr Martin Hagger. These staff have publications in many leading international journals including Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Health Psychology, European Journal of Personality, British Journal of Health Psychology, British Journal of Social Psychology, Psychology and Health. The group holds research grants from the ESRC, DoH, Unilever and CRUK. Professor Orbell is an ESRC College member, Dr Perugini is Associate Editor of the British Journal of Social Psychology and is Secretary of the European Association of Personality Psychology and Dr Hagger is Chair of the Conference Committee of the BPS Division of Health Psychology to be held at Essex in 2006. The Group have collaborations with colleagues in Italy, Germany, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands and the US and regularly host visitors and interne students from abroad.

Information about the Department of Psychology:

The Department of Psychology was founded in 1991 and has now expanded to 22 full-time academic staff (10 Professors, 2 Readers, 1 Senior Lecturer, 8 lecturers, and 1 Senior Teaching Fellow). Staff are responsible for the teaching of approximately 330 undergraduates and over 30 postgraduate students. Professor Rick Hanley is currently the Head of Department. Professor Riccardo Russo is due to take over as Head of Department in August 2004.

The Department has rapidly gained a reputation for excellence in research and was awarded a 5A in the last RAE. Feedback from the panel revealed that "approximately 50%" of the work submitted to the RAE was of international quality. The standard of learning and teaching on Psychology courses at Essex was described by the last TQA as "excellent". The Department is currently recognized by the ESRC for the receipt of postgraduate research studentships (plus 3 and 1 plus 3). Support for Research postgraduates comes also from the EPSRC and from University of Essex Postgraduate Scholarships.

Research in the Department is based around the activity of 4 Research Groups:

Cognition,

Neuropsychology and Development,

Perception,

Social and Health Psychology.

External support of research activity currently includes project grant funding from the ESRC, EPSRC, Wellcome Trust, Unilever, and the Department of Health. There is close liaison with other departments at the University of Essex, including the Department of Health and Human Sciences. All members of the Department are provided with an Apple Power Macintosh or Pentium-class PC (as preferred) linked through the campus network to the internet, providing access for electronic mail and internal and external Library and database facilities. Some start-up funds will initially be available to facilitate the research activity of the successful applicant.

The Department enjoys excellent accommodation in a relatively new purpose-built building, with a full range of technical facilities and support, including good computing facilities for teaching. Currently,

there are two main teaching labs: one for data collection with 12 individual booths, each containing two Power Macintosh computers; the other, recently constructed for data processing, seating 56 and containing

30 G4/733 Power Macintosh computers. 15 additional computer booths each containing two computers, are located close by and form an extension to lab facilities during formal lab sessions, increasing the booth number to 27 and the computer count to 54. At other times these 15 booths can be used for general research testing.

In addition to teaching labs, there are several purpose-built laboratories (e.g., a specialist Computer Group Testing lab with 6 networked Power Macintosh computers in individual booths; a Developmental lab with one-way mirror; Two Hearing research Labs each with two sound proof booths; a Developmental Neuropsychology lab; a Visual Attention lab; a Memory lab; a social cognitive lab with 4 IBM computers running Inquisit software). The Department also has good audio-visual facilities.

The University enjoys an excellent reputation for research in the social sciences.

The University is situated in parkland east of Colchester and is within 50 minutes of London by train, 50 minutes of Stanstead airport by road, 85 minutes of Cambridge by road, and is close to the Suffolk border, the Dedham Valley and the Stour and Blackwater estuaries. There are good sports facilities and excellent sailing and golf opportunities.

Duties:

The duties of the post will include:

research and publication;

supervision of MSc and PhD theses;

contribution to general teaching and curriculum design on our undergraduate and postgraduate degree schemes;

administrative duties, as assigned by the Head of Department;

other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Department or his/her nominee.

These duties are a guide to the work that the postholder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances and do not form part of the contract of employment.

Essential Experience, Skills and Attributes of the Postholder:

a research and publication record and a demonstrable potential for achievement in teaching;

the ability to strengthen the Department’s teaching and research specialisms and an ability to generate research and project funds.

Desirable Experience, Skills and Attributes of the Postholder:

Research and teaching experience in the area of Social or Health Psychology.
