DUKE UNIVERSITY

The Department of Psychology: Social and Health Sciences invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor position in Social Psychology, beginning fall 2004. This search is part of Duke's ongoing effort to rebuild its traditional strength in social psychology. Along with rebuilding its core program in the Psychology Department, Duke is developing a broad Interdisciplinary Initiative in Social Psychology. We seek an outstanding mid-career scholar as part of this overall effort.

If you are interested in the position and will be at the upcoming meeting of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology in Boston, please feel free to contact one of us about the opening: Tanya Chartrand (Tanya.Chartrand@Duke.edu), Rick Hoyle (RHoyle@Duke.edu), Tim Strauman (TJStraum@Duke.edu), or Wendy Wood (WWood@Duke.edu).

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future of Social Psychology at Duke. The Department has strong graduate programs in Clinical and Developmental Psychology, each of which is firmly connected to multiple perspectives from Social Psychology. In addition, social psychological perspectives and processes are important components of several cross-disciplinary social science and cognitive science initiatives at Duke. Collaborative teaching and research in the domains of Cognitive Social Science, Social and Health Policy, Political Psychology, Educational Research, Decision Science, Marketing, and Organizational Behavior are a few among many examples of cross-unit collaboration. As such, the interests of existing department faculty coupled with these valued interdisciplinary initiatives provide a vibrant and fertile ground for the building of a strong Social Psychology core within our department. By joining this core with social psychologists at Duke from other units (Sociology, Law, Business, Political Science, Education, and Medical Psychology; see the program description on our departmental website, www.psych-shs.duke.edu) we are building a unique interdisciplinary program in Social Psychology at Duke.

The particular research area of the scholar we seek is open. Nevertheless, self and social cognition, attitudes and social influence, personal relationships, social biases and stereotypes, and political psychology are examples of research areas of particular interest. An excellent record of research and publications and an ability to attract extramural support are essential. Finally, we seek a scholar with strong commitments to both graduate and undergraduate education.

Applications received by December 1, 2003 will be guaranteed consideration. Duke is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Applications from women and from minority race/ethnic scholars are especially welcome.

To apply, send letter of application, curriculum vitae, reprints/preprints of representative publications, and the names and addresses of three references to:
