The Psychology program at Hiram College invites applications for a full-time (9-month) Tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. We are committed to recruiting and retaining a workforce that values the JEDI principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Founded in 1850, Hiram College provides students of all backgrounds an attainable private education that teaches the 21st-century skills needed to thrive professionally and personally in the face of inevitable and constant change. Built on a community that fosters student-faculty collaboration, the College equips all students with the tools necessary to embrace active learning in the classroom, in Ohio, and beyond through technology, internship, study away, research, and other experiential opportunities for growth and development. Recognized by Colleges of Distinction, The Princeton Review, U.S. News and World Report, and as a top baccalaureate college by Washington Monthly, Hiram enrolls over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students in academic programs on its Northeast Ohio campus and through Online@Hiram.

Hiram College is committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and vibrant educational environment. Our student population is diverse in many ways, including economic background, ethnic heritage, and academic interests. We value experiential, interdisciplinary, and project-based learning that focuses on the enduring questions we have faced and the urgent challenges of our times.

The Psychology program is situated in the School of Health and Medical Humanities, along with the Biomedical Humanities, Integrative Exercise Science, Nursing, and Public Health programs. We seek candidates who will complement our school’s strengths and who are eager to explore possibilities for collaboration across schools and programs. We strongly encourage applications from members of all under-represented groups in higher education.

The area of specialization for this faculty line is open, but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the areas of brain and behavior, community, consumer, cross-cultural, counseling, developmental, ecological/ human-factors, environmental, forensic, political, or organizational psychology. Our majors currently take courses from two concentrations: Applied Health and Disability Studies and Applied Social and Behavioral Studies, which are supplemented by a variety of electives that intersect the social sciences.

The teaching load is 22-24 credit hours per year spread across our Fall and Spring semesters, each made up of a 12-week term followed by a 3-week term. Faculty typically teach two courses during each 12-week and one course in each intensive 3-week (which lends itself well to project-based learning). In addition to discipline-specific courses, teaching responsibilities for this faculty line may include general psychology, research design and analysis, careers in psychology, senior capstone, first-year writing program, and/or upper-level urgent challenge team-taught courses. Other responsibilities include academic advising, facilitating experiential learning (independent research, internships), maintaining an active scholarly agenda and service to the college.

Required Qualifications

--Doctorate/terminal degree in Psychology (ABD considered)
--Experience in culturally competent teaching
--Commitment to ongoing development as a teacher-scholar
--Demonstrated passion for teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging diverse undergraduate students in learning, and mentoring them in research.

Preferred Qualifications

--Experience teaching undergraduate-level courses of 10-30 students
--Demonstrated expertise with project- or problem-based teaching and learning
--Interest in team-teaching
