 Chair in Psychology
Institution/Organization: Kingston University, London
Job Location: United Kingdom
Contact Person: Chris Hewer

The Department of Psychology at Kingston University is looking to appoint a Chair in Psychology. The new chair will be joining a growing department that regularly attracts external funding. The initiative to appoint at professorial level is part of a strategy to support the development of a new multi-disciplinary research centre in the School: The Centre for Research in Communities, Identities and Difference (CReCID) whose areas of research include citizenship, multiple-identities, intergroup relations within and between communities in diverse societies, community based approaches to preventing and responding to violence, and the impact of individuals and/or groups in adversity on communities. The chair will lead and mentor members of the new research group and will maintain a programme of research that receives international attention. They will also attract and supervise research students, build national and international collaborative links, while also contributing to the School’s academic management. The appointed chair will have a record of world-leading research and current success at attracting external funding.

In the recent past, staff within the School have attracted funding of over £1 million from the EU, AHRC, ESRC, National Institute for Health Research, British Council, ERAB and other organisations to examine a variety of social and political issues that affect communities at local, national and international levels; for example, political participation amongst young people from different ethnic backgrounds, inter-ethnic conflict in the region of Kurdistan in Iraq, PTSD among children from the Palestinian territories, problems experienced by child asylum-seekers from Afghanistan, police-community engagement and counter-terrorism, prostitution policies across Europe, the effects of gambling and the misuse of alcohol and drugs on communities, and the co-production of mental health service provision and public perceptions of mental health problems by service users and carers. It is envisaged that the Centre will bring together colleagues from different disciplines within the School and across the Faculty working in these areas in order to enhance multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary collaborations that could provide more comprehensive solutions to social problems.
