The College is the largest of six academic units at the University of Maine, comprised of 214 faculty members with a current graduate student enrollment of 373 and undergraduate student enrollment of 2,476. The College includes the Departments of Anthropology, Art, Chemistry, Communication and Journalism, English, History, Mathematics and Statistics, Modern Languages and Classics, New Media, Philosophy, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, School of Performing Arts, School of Computing and Information Science, and School of Policy and International Affairs, as well as Franco-American Studies, the Maine Folklife Center, Native American Programs, Intensive English Institute, Canadian American Center, Franco American Center, and National Poetry Foundation. It is affiliated with a number of other internationally recognized programs and is recognized for the engaged, interdisciplinary research of its faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.

Candidates for this position should demonstrate forward-looking leadership skills, a commitment to achieving diversity, and the vision to address the programmatic and technological challenges of the 21st century. The Dean is expected to show creative leadership in enhancing the effectiveness and visibility of the College’s teaching, research, and outreach missions, and implementing the College’s Strategic Plan:

The Dean reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and works with the Office of University Development on outreach and fundraising efforts. An appreciation of the value of synergy across disciplines throughout the University is essential.

Applications must present evidence of leadership, advocacy, interpersonal and organizational skills; a commitment to achieving diversity; skills in the areas of development, procurement of external funding, and fiscal management; as well as skills in strategic planning and implementation. The successful candidate must have a distinguished record of teaching; research and/or creative achievement; administrative experience at a college or university; and the credentials to qualify for the rank of Professor with tenure in a discipline within the College. Applications should show evidence of the candidate’s abilities to be an effective communicator, advocate, and spokesperson for the College with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administration in an environment of shared decision-making and governance. The successful candidate must have experience promoting collaborative, inter-disciplinary work in teaching, research, and engagement.
