The Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, Canada is accepting applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow. Applicants can be either Canadian or non-Canadian citizens. The successful candidate will be employed to work primarily under the supervision of Dr. Susan Birch in connection with a federally funded SSHRC Insight Grant on the nature and development of selective social learning. The position will commence as soon as possible. Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled. The post is a full-time position for a minimum of one year with the possibility for renewal up to two additional years contingent upon exemplary progress.

The post involves carrying out primarily experimental research investigating the nature and development of social cognition (with an emphasis on selective social learning). The candidate will work primarily in Dr. Susan Birch’s laboratory. Some projects may be carried out in collaboration with other UBC researchers affiliated with this grant (i.e., Dr. Andrew Baron, Dr. Geoff Hall, Dr. Joseph Henrich). Responsibilities include contributing to research design, assisting with data collection, conducting data analyses, assisting in the training and mentoring of affiliated graduate and undergraduate researchers, and contributing to the writing of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of research productivity commensurate with experience, considerable experience conducting experimental research with children, and a solid grasp of commonly used statistical techniques and software (e.g., SPSS or other statistical packages). Prior experience in, and knowledge of, research on the development of social cognition, ‘theory of mind’, impression formation, prosociality, and/or social learning is highly desirable.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Psychology or a related discipline (or expect to have completed their Ph.D. defence no later than December 31, 2013). To apply, send an email with the subject line ‘Post-doc Application’ to kidlab [at] psych.ubc.ca with a single document including a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information (phone and email) for 3 professional referees who have agreed to be contacted and up to 3 representative publications (re-prints or preprints) as separate files. The base salary for this position is $38,000 Cdn/year plus benefits for the candidate and any dependents. Salary and benefits are commensurate with standards set by the University of British Columbia and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The successful candidate will also receive a travel allowance of $1200/year to attend conferences or scholarly meetings. Research-associated costs will be covered by the research supervisor’s grant.
