Dr. Kurt Gray and Joshua Conrad Jackson are recruiting a full-time research assistant to manage project activities for the John Templeton Foundation grant, “The Evolution and Endurance of Religious Explanations.” This position is ideal for students interested in gaining more research experience prior to applying to graduate school in psychology, anthropology, or similar fields.

Responsibilities

This successful applicant will be responsible for overseeing research exploring religious belief and meaning-making in over 100 world cultures. This will involve (a) reading and analyzing cultural ethnographies, (b) designing cross-cultural surveys on worldwide religious beliefs, (c) writing ethics applications and manuscripts, and (d) managing undergraduate and post-graduate research assistants. The applicant will be encouraged to pursue their own research related to religion, culture, morality, or related areas during their time in the laboratory. The position will run from approximately August 1st, 2020 until August 1st, 2021, but there is room for flexibility.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, psychology, or a related field in behavioral science or philosophy. They must have experience with Qualtrics, a statistical software (R preferred but SPSS, SAS, or STATA also accepted), and Microsoft Excel. Previous familiarity with ethnography or survey design is a plus. Fluency in Python, C, Java, or other coding languages is also highly encouraged. Applicants should be detail-oriented, conscientious, and independently driven. They should be social and comfortable leading small teams. The ideal applicant would be interested in interdisciplinary research, since we will be working with collaborators from a number of disciplines.

Application Instructions

To apply, please email Joshua Conrad Jackson at joshcj@live.unc.edu with the subject header "Research Assistant." Include a cover letter detailing research interests and past experience (1-page max), a CV, unofficial transcript, and contact information for two professional references.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until April 7th. All applicants will receive an initial decision on their application by April 15th.
