 Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job Location: Tennessee, U.S.A.
Job Type: Postdoctoral
Contact Person: Matt Morris

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Matt Morris in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Morris lab is focused on identifying early psychosocial and neuroendocrine risk factors for trauma-related psychopathology and persistent pain, with particular emphasis on the role of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function in posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Identifying early risk markers for trauma-related mental and physical health conditions and understanding pathways to resilience are critical for the development of secondary prevention programs.

The primary responsibilities for this postdoctoral research position are to oversee a study evaluating whether (1) prolonged HPA activity, indexed by hair cortisol concentration, and (2) experimental pain sensitivity, indexed by responses to a thermal pain protocol, mediate the relation of cumulative adversity exposure to subsequent daily pain in African American adults (AA). This proposal will adopt a social-ecological framework to understand how adversity at multiple levels (i.e., developmental, contextual, and individual) contributes to daily pain in AA adults. Secondary responsibilities are to assist with an ongoing study entitled ‘Models of Risk for PTSD’ (K01 MH101403), which examines HPA reactivity, trauma-related psychopathology, and coping over a 6-month follow-up period in young adult women varying in their exposure to adversity.

Candidates should have a recent PhD degree with a background in psychology/behavioral sciences or related fields. The postdoctoral researcher will provide oversight for all aspects of a multi-year federally-sponsored research project. Responsibilities will include recruitment, administering clinical interviews and the laboratory pain protocol, data management and analysis, preparation of posters for conferences, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. Prior experience in trauma or pain research and proficiency with SPSS are preferred. Prior training and experience working with low SES African Americans is desirable.
